Flightless fruit flies are the perfect food for young manti nymphs until they are large enough to take small crickets, house flies, and other small insects (usually about 3-4 weeks.) Although drosophila hydei are the larger of the two fruit fly species used for feeding Chinese Mantis, they can be fed as the first food for mantis after they hatch. (The smaller species are drosophila melanogaster).
