Flightless fruit flies are the perfect food for young manti nymphs until they are large enough to take small house flies and other small insects (usually about 3-4 weeks.) Drosophila melanogaster are the smaller of the two fruit fly species used for feeding Chinese Mantis. (The larger species are drosophila Hydei).
