Our Mantis Starter Kit includes two mantis in individual 32oz cups, a culture of fruit flies, ideas on how to create an enclosure for when the mantis outgrows the insect cup they come in (in about 4-6 weeks), a spray bottle and access to our online care guide.

We are not currently shipping mantis - pickup only in Saskatoon.

For the first 4-6 weeks, Chinese mantis will eat the flightless fruit flies provided with the kit. As the mantis get larger, they can eat a variety of insects you can collect from your yard, or if you prefer, you can purchase feeder insects from the petstore.

When people hear the word “mantis,” they commonly envision a stereotypical image of the Chinese Mantis (tenodera sinensis). Originally introduced from the far east, the Chinese mantis is now commonly found in the Eastern US and even the South Eastern parts of Canada. Its colouration can be green, brown or a combination of the two colours. Even on the brown specimens one commonly finds the green colour running the length of the fore-wings’ outer edge. The Chinese mantis commonly reaches a length of four or five inches long, with the females being larger and slightly longer than the males.

  • Our mantis nymphs are currently eating flightless fruit flies, but they will eat a variety of live insects as they grow larger. You can download our mantis basic care guide by clicking here. Mantis are highly cannibalistic, and must be housed individually after the first few weeks.

If you are new to keeping mantis- we would love to talk you through everything you need to know. Send us a message and we can walk you through all of the details for caring for these unique insects and we can answer all your questions. If you live in Saskatoon, we can setup a time for you to come and see them in person and answer your questions while you are here.

Although they can remain in the 32oz clear plastic container they arrive in for the 4-6 weeks, as they grow they will need a larger enclosure. If you don't have an enclosure, we can help you decide what to use - or you can purcahse one of the variety of enclosures we have available for sale.

  • Unfortunately we are unable to provide shipping on our mantis learning kits at this time.
